Supporting Financial Literacy

The Challenge:
State legislation to enhance financial literacy is stagnant in capitals across the country. The national savings rate plummets as financial education is cut from state’s high school curriculums.

The Hilltop Solution:
As the crisis worsens and attention wanes, Hilltop creates a coalition to put a spotlight on the issue and give momentum to the policymakers trying to help. Led by an esteemed advisory board, including former New York City Mayor David Dinkins and former President of the National Council of La Raza Raul Yzaguirre, the Hilltop-managed coalition promotes financial literacy education to state legislators and education officials. Hilltop conducts research, develops the coalition message, and creates the persuasion literature used by its coast-to-coast network to rally support from elected officials, community leaders and small businesses. By setting up interviews, placing editorials in targeted newspapers, lobbying and conducting grasstops outreach, Hilltop puts the issue on the front page and airwaves.

The Result:
Using its national network, Hilltop recruits dozens of national and state organizations to join the coalition and speak out on behalf of legislation nationwide. A number of states successfully pass bills and the issue starts to gain traction.
